The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society is a national maritime charity that has been providing vital financial support to merchant seafarers, fishermen and their dependents for 180 years.
As a maritime PR agency, Definition was asked to devise a campaign that would raise awareness of the charity, drive traffic to its website and celebrate the nation’s link to the sea and the maritime industry.
We did this by launching an annual photography competition, now in its seventh year, to find ‘the UK’s ultimate sea view’.
Participants are encouraged to send in their pictures of the coast, seafarers and the sea. Definition managed all aspects of the competition, from securing high-profile judges, driving entries to the competition through on- and offline communications programmes, and publicising the event where the winners were announced.
In 2019, the judges’ lineup included the Picture Editor from The Sunday Times and the Head of Pictures from The i. Definition also secured Ensign as a key supporter of the competition, with funding generated to offer photographic equipment for the competition winner, who received their prize at the Society’s AGM at Fishmongers’ Hall, London, in October.
